Texas Students Design Home Completely Powered by the Sun and Rain

NexusHaus uses zero city energy or water and instead relies completely on nature. This off-the-grid project has caught the eye of many builders, especially those in draught-prone areas of the country.

While most off-grid homes are wooden cabins or yurts, these students came up with a sleek, minimalist and contemporary design instead. The whole design seems to be crafted with nature in mind — just look at those windows!

Aside from water and energy independence, the group took food production into account as well. According to their project site, NexusHaus uses recycled greywater for garden irrigation. It also has an aquaponics system for raising fish and more plant growth.

To make the house a reality, they Crowdfunded $21,422 and used all reusable materials to build. NexusHaus is set to find a permanent home in East Austin when it returns from competition in Irvine, Calif.
